Cholamandal, started in 1965 is an Artists' village situated on an eight acres plot of land 8 km. South of Adyar on Muttukadu Road, on the Sea.

Cholamandal is hardly a village. It is a multum in Parvo, and tells the story of the strength and the ailments of the present day art in India.Indeed it contains a lesson for artists all over India and also for thepatrons of art and for the administration.

Cholamandal is a co-operative enterprise, undertaken by a group of 30 artists who, formed themselves into an association to provide adequate opportunites and create the proper atmosphere for developing and utilising their artistic talents. About 20 artists live in this small colony. Many of them have constructed houses or cottages, in which they live and work.
