The job of Transport Department includes registration of vehicles, issue of driving licences, issue of permits, collection of related taxes, enforcement of Motor Vehicle Act and Rules and matters of road safety.

The Transport Department is headed by the Transport Commissioner and functions under the administrative control of the Home Department of the Government. The Transport Commissioner also functions as State Transport Authority.

In Chennai city Joint Transport Commissioner (City) is the Regional Transport Authority while in the Districts the Collectors are the Regional Transport Authorities.
