Vijaykant

VijayKant is a very popular Tamil film actor and a politician. He is a veteran of 150 movies. He has acted only in Tamil films. He is known as 'Captain' to his fans and collegues in Kollywood. He has the biggest fan club in Tamil Nadu among all heroes in Kollywood. VijayKant is also called as 'Puratchi Kalaignar'.

Personal Life
Vijaykant, born on August 25, 1952, in Madurai in Tamilnadu, as Vijayaraj. His parents are K.N.Alagarswami and Aandal. He married his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth on January 31, 1990. He has two sons named Vijay Prabhakar and Shanmuga Pandian. He has five brothers and five sisters. His mothertongue is Telugu.

Film Career
Vijaykant acted in about 150 Tamil films. "Inikkum Ilamai" was his first film and it was directed by M.A.Kaja. After this, he acted in "Thooraththu Idi Muzhakkam", "Neerottam" and "Agal Vilakku". He is nicknamed 'Captain', as he has starred in a popular movie called "Captain Prabhakharan". "Captain Prabhakharan" was a Blockbuster of the year 1992 & Vijayakanth's 100th film.

Recent Films :
Eventhough he is active in the politics, Vijaykant has not left the film industry. He acted in Perarasu and Dharmapuri in 2006 and Sabari in 2007. His next film 'Vithagan' is announced for 2007 itself.

Trivia
Vijaykant was the President of Nadigar Sangam for three consecutive times. His opposing candidate for Nadigar Sangam was Actress Devi. She received only 122 votes whereas he got 749 votes and won the election. Most of his films have been dubbed in Telugu. His wife is the chairperson of Shri Andal Alagar College of Engineering founded by him. Mrs. Janaki Ramachandran had given him the van used by MGR during his political campaign.

Vijaykant has won many awards and recognition.
* 1981 - "Thoorathu Idimuzhakkam" selected for World Film Festival in Delhi.
* 1986 - Best Actor Filmfare Award for "Amman Koyil Kizhakalae".
* 1989 - Best Actor Cinema Express Award "Poonthotta Kavalkaran".
* 1989 - Best Actor Award "Chindura Poove" & Film Fans Award
* 2001 - Kalaimamani Award by Tamil Nadu Government.
* 2001 - Best Tamil Citizen Award by Mayor of Houston U.S.A.

Political Career
Vijaykant entered into the TamilNadu politics recently. He formed a new party "Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam" (DMDK) on Sept 14th 2005 in a political conference held at Madurai. The party contested in all 234 seats in the TamilNadu State Elections in May 2006. He won from Vridhachalam constituency which was considered a PMK stronghold. The party polled almost 3 million votes (about 10% share).

Charity Work
* Donates Sewing Machines, Tricycle, Iron Box, Idli Vessels etc., to poor people on his birthday.
* Helps poor students with good marks to join colleges and accommodates them in his Engineering college without charging any fee from them.
* Donates Rs.25,000/- to little flower school every year.
* Donates Rs.50,000/- to MGR Blind School every year.
* Donated Rs 2 lakhs to Defence Personal Children Education every year.
* Donated Rs.5 Lakhs to Kargil relief fund.
