Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan is the most talented and highly acclaimed actor of South Indian Cinema. He is a versatile actor par excellence. Born into an Iyengar family at Paramakkudi in Tamil Nadu on November 7, 1954, Kamal Haasan has an acting career which spans over four decades. He is known as Sagalakala Vallavan. He has starred in almost all the major Indian languages - Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi and Bengali.

Acting Career
Kamal is the fourth child of Sri.Srinivasan and Smt.Rajalakshmi. His father gave all his 3 sons the suffix Haasan as a sign of friendship to one Mr. Haasan. Kamal entered the film field in 1960 at the tender age of six. He acted in the movie Kalathoor Kannammaa as a child artist. He continued acting as child artist in films like Paarthaal Pasi Theerum , Paadha Kaanikkai, Kannum Karalum (Malayalam), Vaanampadi and Anandha Jodhi. He started working as an Assistant Choreographer in films and during this time his association with notable Tamil director K. Balachander began.

Kamal Haasan became a popular teen idol with his performances in the films Avargal, Aval Oru Thodarkathai, Solla Thaan Ninaikkiren, Maanavan and Kumara Vijayam and 16 Vayathinile. 16 Vayathinile was his first film with the famous actress Sridevi. They acted together in 23 films. He got a variety of roles in the films as a disc jockey in Ilamai Oonjaladugiradhu, a psychopathic serial killer of women in Sigappu Rojakkal, a Middle-Eastern youth with a magical lamp in Alavudheenum Arpudha Vilakkum etc.

Kamal Haasan movies in 1990s include Indran Chandran, Michael Madhana Kamarajan, Guna, Singaravelan,Thevar Magan, Maharasan, Kalaignan, Mahanadhi, Sathi Leelavathi, Kuruthipunal, Indian, Avvai Shanmugi, Chachi 420 (Hindi) and Kadhala Kadhala. His roles in each of these films were different. In Michael Madhana Kamarajan, he acted as quadruplets, a modern youth turned villager in Thevar Magan, a special police squad officer against terrorism in Kuruthipunal, a righteous old revolutionary as well as his corrupt son in Indian and as an old lady maid and as a dance master in Avvai Shanmughi and Chachi 420.

Latest Films
His latest film Vettaiyadu Villaiyadu is in the post production stage. His new projects announced are Dasavatharam in which Kamal will be performing in ten roles. His dream project is the historical film Marudha Nayagam which started the shoot in 2000 is expected to be completed in 2008. The film was inaugurated in the presence of Her Highness Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Awards and Honours
Kamal has one the National Award for the Best Actor thrice for his films Nayagan, Moondram Pirai and Indian. He also won the National Award for the Best Child Artist for the film Kalathoor Kannamma in 1960. He bagged the best actor award at the Asian Film festivals held in 1983 and 1985 for Saagara Sangamam and Swathi Muthyam. Kamal holds the record for the most number of Filmfare Awards(18) by a person. Seven of his movies were sent to the Oscars as India's official entry. This is also a record.

Kamal Haasan has been honoured when his self-directed venture Virumaandi won the International Award for Best Asian Film, selected by a European jury, at the eighth Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) in South Korea for the Year 2004. TIME magazine listed his film Nayagan as one of the World Top 100 Movies of all time. On the whole, Kamal Haasan has bagged 171 awards (national, as well as international), much more than any other actor in the world.

Kamal Haasan has been awarded the Padma Shri in 1990, the fourth highest Civilian Award of India. He was honoured as Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He has been conferred an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama Deemed University, Chennai in 2005.

Trivia
Kamal was born in an Iyengar family, but he denied his caste identity. He donated his eyes and also offered his body for medical research after his death, the first Indian celebrity to do so. He is the first Indian Actor who promised that he will not act in scenes which portray smoking. He is good Classical Dancer as well as a singer.

His personal life is always a subject of great attraction for the media. He has had a turbulent personal life. He married Vani Ganapathi and divorced her to marry another actress Sarika. He has two daughters with Sarika, Shruti and Akshara. Their marriage lasted till 2003.
