This temple is also known as Ekambaranathar Temple. Ekambareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the is the largest temple in the town of Kanchipuram.

Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the five major Shiva temples or Pancha Bootha Sthalams representing five elements of the Earth. Ekambaranathar temple represents the element - Earth. This temple is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams.

It is believed that Parvati worshipped Shiva in the form of a Prithivi Lingam, under a mango tree here at this temple.This is an ancient temple.
