The birthday of Lord Vinayaka, the eldest son of Lord Shiva was celebrated throughout the country in a meaningful way. People thronged the temples right from the wee hours of the morning. All the Vinayaka temples had a festive looks. Special abhishegam took place.

Ceremonious decoration of the idol with ornaments, flowers and lights, chanting Sanskrit verses, and the offering of a special Prashada - Kozhukattai (Modaks) took place in every house hold. Idols of Vinyaka were kept at several places in the city and immersed in the ocean after 10-days of festivities.
