Kalakshetra or "The Abode of Arts", is an ornament to the city of
Chennai. It was established by Smt. Rukmini Arundale who dedicated
her entire life to the performing arts. Kalakshetra is
 situated in
the ancient settlement of Thiruvanmiyur amidst age old trees and
flower gardens, this institute reverberates to the sound of music
and classical dance. Its dance dramas during December are
spectacular.
Many renowned artists of Bharatanatyam, Kathakali and Carnatic music
participated in building up the Institution and maintaining the
highest traditions in education and training. Students from all over
the world are trained here in the traditional Gurukulam style, ie
the Guru imparts knowledge to a small group of students.
Some of India's well known dancers like Yamini Krishnamurthi, Leela
Samson and Alarmel Valli are trained here. Visitors interested in
observing day classes are welcome here. The Dance performances are
staged in the school's auditorium.
