Government Arts College was started in Paramakudi by the Government of Tamilnadu as a Co-Educational institution, during the academic year1995-96 to enhance the dynamic growth of the young generation by providing higher education at affordable cost.

Initially it was started with the following four undergraduate courses:

1. Business Administration
2. Corporate Secretary Ship
3. Bio Chemistry
4. Computer Science.

During the academic year 1996-97 one more under graduate course in Electronics was added and thus the College, at present, is having five undergraduate courses with the total sanctioned strength of 160 students.

At the time of commencement the college was affiliated to Madurai, Kamaraj University and from the academic year 2003-04 it has been affiliated to Alagappa University, Karaikudi.
