The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is the oldest bird sanctuary in India. It is situated in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.

Records say that the sanctuary was in existence for the past 200 years. The sanctuary spans across 72 acres of marshy land.

One can reach Vedanthangal Sanctuary from Chennai which is 90 km from the place. This is one of the spectacular breeding grounds for so many species of birds.

A bird watcher would be amused by the herds of birds on the bushes in the lake. November to February is the ideal season to visit the sanctuary.

The fertility of the land is very high due to the presence of guano formed from the bird's droppings - one of the finest natural fertilizers known to mankind.

115 species of birds have been recorded in this sanctuary. Vedanthangal is one of the most spectacular breeding grounds for migratory birds in India. Some of the migratory birds travel thousands of miles all the way from Siberia to avoid the biting cold.
