Madurai city is synonymous with Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The temple structures are surrounded by huge walls with 12 gopurams. These gopurams are landmarks of Madurai. These towering gateways indicate the entrance to the temple complex at the four cardinal points, while lesser gopurams lead to the sanctums of the main deities.
