Mysore was the headquarters of the Wodeyar dynasty who ruled Mysore until 1947. the area around Mysore was known as Mahishūru and was ruled by a demon, Mahishasura. The demon was killed by the Goddess Chamundeshwari, whose temple is situated atop the Chamundi Hills.

Mysore Palace, St.Philomena's Church, Chamundi Hills, Chamundeshwari Temple etc are some of the famous places of tourist interest in Mysore.
