The BCG vaccine is one of the oldest vaccines in use today and is considered to be highly effective in preventing severe forms of tuberculosis, particularly in children. The BCG Vaccine Laboratory was established in 1948 as a public sector enterprise to manufacture BCG vaccine for the National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme in India.
