Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple at Madurai Photos.

Meenakshi Amman Temple is located on the banks of river Vaigai and is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the Consort of Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati is worshiped as Meenakshi Amman in this ancient temple. Lord Shiva is known here as Sundareswarar.

Madurai Meenakshi temple is a symbol of Tamil culture and the city of Madurai is situated around this magnificent temple. Meenakshi Amman Temple has 14 Gopurams. The Southern Gopuram is the tallest (51.9 metres). Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapam (Hall of 100 pillars) and the the Thousand Pillar Hall which contains 985 carved pillars are the other important structures in this age old temple.

The annual 10-day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival is the most important festival in this temple.
