This temple is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Ulagalanda Perumal along with His Consort Lakshmi as Amudavalli.

It is believed that the Lord appeared as Vamana (the dwarf incarnation) and quelled the pride of the Asura Kind Bali.
