Madurai District is situated in the South of Tamil Nadu state. It is bounded on the North by the districts of Dindigul, Thiruchirapalli and on the East by Sivagangai and on the West by Theni and South by Virudhunagar .

Madurai District houses the world famous Sri Meenakshi Sundareshwarar temple and is situated on the banks of river Vaigai.

It had a population of 2,578,201 as of 2001. It is 56.01% urbanised as per Census 2001. The district has a literacy of 78.65%, ranked 7th in the state.
